As a result of intensive shelling by the Tajik military, 12-year-old Madina Rahmatjanova was killed. This happened on April 29 during an attack by the Tajik military to Kyrgyz villages. Madina, her mother Narbu Hamdova and her 10-year-old sister were escaping to find a shelter, which Madina did not reach.
Naimjan Abdullov told RFE/RL’s Kyrgyz Service that he is alone at their home Batken conducting his daughter’s funeral. “On the day of the attack, I went to work. My wife stayed at home with our two daughters. When the wife went outside, something fell on our house’s roof and exploded violently stunning her. She screamed and called for help, but no one came. She took our daughters and ran out of the house when another shell exploded in front of them. The eldest daughter fell down. Shrapnels hit my wife and youngest daughter as well. My wife hugged the youngest daughter, and was stunned” says grieving Naimjan.
An eyewitness told a news agency 24.kg that Madina was hit by fragments of a mortar shell. They found Madina lying on the ground bleeding as they were evacuating the residents to safety. “We immediately took her to the hospital. Unfortunately, they could not save her. Madina had too many wounds,” says an eyewitness.
Madina was the middle daughter in the family. “Madina was a diligent, intelligent girl. She was an excellent student earning A’s from 1st to 5th grade. I have lost my beautiful daughter. She used to pray five times a day. She was fasting the day she died. I cannot find a place for myself, all I do is grieve. I can't tell you anything else” says Naimjan Abdullov.
